Employee Engagement:
In a recent major study employees were asked .. "Would your boss notice if you were to increase your workload by 15%?" They also asked the question .. "Would your boss notice if you were to decrease your workload by 15%?" In both cases the majority of respondents said NO. Basically this represents a 30% range of discretionary effort that you may or may not get from your employees. How is your company encouraging this effort?
Consider for a moment if it could help your company to maximize discretionary effort? Or to outperform your competitors by 15-30%? We suspect it would? How then, can your company nurture, encourage and reinforce the types of behaviors, attitudes and enthusiasm required to drive performance and success?
In addition, many national research studies and survey results from several hundred thousand employees and companies in virtually all types of industries shows time and time again that approximately 20% of employees are considered highly engaged, 60% are moderately engaged and unfortunately 20% are disengaged.
How does your company compare? Would you agree with these national statistics? Is there room for improvement in employee morale, engagement, performance or results?
What could it mean to a company to increase a significant percentage of employees from moderately to highly engaged or from disengaged to moderately engaged? The results could be truly impressive.
Let's take a closer look at "Encouraging the Heart"! The word encouragement has its root in the Latin word cor, which literally means 'heart'. So does the word courage. To have courage means to have heart. To encourage-to provide with or give courage-literally means to give others heart. We are not referring to the sentimental notions expressed on greeting cards or the soft side of people's feelings related to business. Rather we mean hope, when faced with difficulties; courage, when faced with challenges and the fortitude to reach inside and give your best even when faced with great odds. "Encouraging the Heart" then, is about the dichotomous nature of leadership. It's about firmness and fairness, fortitude and gratitude, passion and compassion. Leaders must have courage themselves and must impart this to their employees.
